Abir Chatterjee (L) and Ritwik Chakraborty in ‘Byomkesh Pawrbo’ (Photo: Venkatesh Films) Bengali filmmakers have long been frustrated by the difficulty of getting their films seen outside their home market centered on Kolkata – but that is about to change thanks to Amazon Prime Video. Writer-director Arindam Sil’s Byomkesh Pawrbo, the latest in a series of films featuring cerebral Bengali sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi, has been acquired by Amazon for international markets, not just its soon-to-launch Indian service, in a multi-title deal with the producer Venkatesh Films. That follows Amazon’s package with prolific film and music producer T-Series which includes Anubhav Sinha’s Bollywood musical romance Tum Bin 2, which opened in cinemas last month. Abir Chatterjee plays the sleuth together with Sohini Sarkar as his wife Satyabati and Ritwik Chakraborty as his sidekick Ajit in the film produced by Venkatesh Films with Surinder Films, which launches on December 16.

Set in 1948, the year after India gained independence from the U.K., the plot follows Byomkesh on assignment from the Bengali government as he investigates the illegal weapons trade which resulted from the departing U.S. Forces selling weapons on the black market after WWII. That leads to an encounter with a murderous ghost rider in the jungle and the anti-independence movement. This is the 12th film adapted from 32 novels written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay between 1932 and 1970 and is the follow-up to Sil’s Har Har Byomkesh, which opened last December and held its own in its region in competition with two high-profile Hindi hits, Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. Sil works on incredibly tight budgets: Har Har Byomkesh, which was set in 1946, cost just 2 crore ($300,000) and grossed double that. In that film, which also starred Chatterjee, Sarkar and Chakraborty, he virtually reinvented the sleuth by taking him out of his traditional drawing-room setting and into the ancient city of Benaras in the aftermath of the Hindu-Muslim riots which killed about 3,500 people.
