Let's ignore realism for a minute, what is compelling about a character like that? I get amazing grades and I'm good at tennis and great at cooking and an excellent teacher because I'm ~Naoki Irie~. That's great for you buddy. I get that seeing Kotoko try so hard is waking him up from the ennui of his effortless existence.

The side characters here are fun though! I didn't realize how entirely accurate the kdrama was to the source; again I like Naoki's family much better than I like him. Except for his brother.
